One of the most interesting of all the beings on Thelosia must be the Aviai, the Rainbow flock, in particular. Where most Aviai are nomadic in nature, the Rainbow flock has created a floating roost, held up by an ingenius combination of powerful magic and advanced technology.

The Rainbow flock has a unique caste structure, using the color of the feathers. Each caste has 50 to 100 members on average. Each caste has a specific duty in the flock, ranging from food collection, to warriors, to religious figures.

There is no real genetic effect on the wing colors; it appears to be completely random. A Goldwing may be born out of a pairing of Sapphirewings, for instance.

The Goldwings are the royalty of the flock. Those born with wings of gold are said to be blessed, and are treated highly. From a young age, they are trained in the ways of the flock, taught to lead.

The Lightwings are said to repersent the goddess of purity, Yainrea. These Aviai, born with pure white wings, are in charge of seeking the Goddess's blessings, most commonly with expected births.

The Silverwings deal in death. They prepare the dead for the next life, in various ways, depending on the caste of the deceased. Blazewings, for instance, are cremated.

The Steelwings are the army of the Rainbow flock. Gifted with great strength, speed, and endurance, the Steelwings are easily spotted for their shining grey feathers. These feathers are sharp and strong as any blade, hence their name and duty.

The Thunderwings have dark grey feathers, the color of stormclouds. They are gifted weather mages, capable of summoning raging storms. Thunderwings are highly revered, and often called upon to appease the easily angered storm god, Imori.

The Bloodwings are both respected and feared. Servants of the vampiric war-goddess, Sanguina, they deal with blood sacrifices. They are the ones who pray to Sanguina for victory in battle.

The Blazewings are known for their fiery attitudes. Easily angered, these fire elementalists work hand in hand with the Steelwings as magical warriors, calling down blazing firestorms upon their enemies. They, like the Steelwings and Bloodwings, worship the war-goddess, Sanguina.

The Sapphirewings are water elementalists. They pray to the river goddess, Duin, who was also said to control the rain. It is the Sapphirewings who pray for rain for bountiful harvests.

The Greenwings are herbalists and healers. Guided by Amara, the earth goddess, these are among the most peaceful of the Aviai.

The Sunwings worship Glawar, the sun god. These shining yellow-winged Aviai are in charge of praying for the warm rays that heat theyre homes, bring life to the plants, and feed the solar arrays that help to keep their roosts afloat.

The Earthenwings are the hunter-gatherers. they are the only Aviai brave enough to flit through the trees far below, searching for food that cannot be found growing in the roost-fields or flying on the air currents.

Finally, there are the most curious of all Aviai: the Blackwings. Cast-offs of the Rainbow flock, these outsiders are considered traitors by those they call "Brightwings."

Blackwings are born randomly, as are all Aviai, but are, from birth, shunned by the flock, even by the childs parents. They are often taken down to the treetops before they can even crawl, and are left to fend for themselves.

It is rare, however, for a Blackwing to die so young; a small but thriving colony of Blackwings exists deep into the forest below the roost. Almost every time, a member of this small sub-flock will collect the child before an hour has passed.

The blackwing Sub-Tribe is a closeknit, very protective community. Breeding-capable, it is believed that the young are born multi-colored, as is normal. But, because Blackwings are forbidden to enter the roost, by the time the child is old enough to fly, the dark passages of the forests have taken the brightness from their wings, and they are considered full-blooded Blackwings.
just for shits and giggles; a nature documentary on the Aviai of Thelosia, a world i am in the process of creating. this episode discusses the aviai of the rainbow flock, the largest by far. there are other flocks, including the desert flyers, the ocean drifters, and the northern icewings, for instance, but more on that later.

.:EDIT:.
im such a friggin idiot. i forgot the blazewings.

everything here (c) ME.
